Commercial dumpster enclosure dimensions should be selected around the containers, required service access, site geometry, and local code. A single enclosure may be sufficient for one commercial waste container. A double enclosure may be appropriate when the property needs more separate storage or the hauler uses two containers. Actual collection requirements determine the layout.

There is no substitute for measuring the site and checking the hauler’s truck and container requirements before a final design. Steel Building USA’s Secure Dumpster™ standard plan package illustrates four specific engineered configurations.

Single and double Secure Dumpster configurations

ModelConfigurationDrawing reference dimension
SD-SSingle new buildPost layout 10 ft by 11 ft 4 in on center; gate clear opening 9 ft 8 1/2 in
SD-DDouble new buildPost layout 20 ft by 11 ft 4 in on center; two gate clear openings of 9 ft 8 1/2 in each
SD-RSingle retrofitExisting enclosure maximum envelope 10 ft 8 in by 12 ft
SD-RDDouble retrofitExisting enclosure maximum envelope 22 ft 4 in by 12 ft

These dimensions come from the standard architectural design summary. Post-center dimensions are not an exterior finished-wall footprint, and maximum retrofit envelope dimensions are not a guarantee an existing site qualifies. Signed engineering documents control.

How many bins will fit?

The current architectural design basis illustrates one 6-cubic-yard bin in the single configuration and two 6-cubic-yard bins in the double configuration. That is the reference configuration, not a claim that every local hauler’s container will have the same exterior dimensions, lid swing, wheels or pickup method.

Ask your local hauler for the actual container cutsheet and loading method. Confirm bin count, recycling and organics needs, service frequency, and whether a truck, fork mechanism, cart movement path, or manual gate swing needs additional maneuvering space.

Organics collection can change the sizing calculation

California’s SB 1383 program requires businesses and multifamily properties to make adequate organic waste collection available. CalRecycle permits different one-, two-, and three-container collection systems depending on local processing and service arrangements. A property should not assume it always needs exactly three large bins.

Start with what the hauler will actually supply, then confirm whether those containers fit without blocking the gates, required route or maintenance access. Refer to CalRecycle’s collection-system guidance.

Roof height, gate weight and clearance

The Secure Dumpster structural design limits the building height to 10 feet and gate-leaf weight to 500 pounds per the controlling signed details. This does not automatically satisfy a hauler’s overhead pickup clearance. Your local hauler and building department need to confirm how bins will be emptied, accessed and maintained under the proposed roof.

Double new-build model SD-D provides two gate openings, while retrofit gate openings vary with existing construction. Check actual clear openings after hinges, hardware and protective elements are installed.

Seven measurements to take before requesting plans

  1. Clear inside width, depth and existing wall height.
  2. Wall thickness, wall condition and post/footing locations.
  3. Gate clear width, swing direction and likely leaf weight.
  4. Exact dimensions and number of hauler containers.
  5. Clear approach path for employees, tenants, carts and collection equipment.
  6. Distance to buildings, utilities, accessible paths and storm drains.
  7. Property grade, drainage direction and any proposed concrete apron.

For existing enclosures, review the roof retrofit qualification factors. For local code concerns, see California roof requirements by city.

What should you send for a quote?

Send the build address, single/double preference, labeled dimensions, front and inside photos, container cutsheets if available and any city correction notice. Secure Dumpster can assess whether its standard configuration is worth further site review. Any site outside the signed structural limits requires separate site-specific engineering.

Next step: check your enclosure site

If you are planning a new enclosure or considering a roof retrofit, review the Secure Dumpster™ engineered dumpster enclosure plans. Four standard models are available for qualifying conditions. Plans are licensed for one physical enclosure at one identified site. The standard package is not a city permit, and sites outside its published design limits need site-specific engineering.
